Why is calvados so expensive?
Calvados takes a lot of fruit and time. About 18 kg of apples give 1 litre of calvados at 70% before reduction. It spends at least 2 years in oak, and older bottlings 4, 6 or more. Some evaporates as the angels' share, and appellation rules govern orchards and distillation. Prices vary by maker and age.

Key facts
- Fruit per litre. ~18 kg apples → 13 litres of 5% cider → 1 litre at 70% before ageing. [1]
- Time. At least 2 years in oak (3 for Domfrontais); VSOP needs 4, hors d'âge 6. [1] [3]
- Losses. The angels' share evaporates in the barrel. [1]
- Rules. Orchard density, yields and distillation methods are set per appellation. [2]
What drives the cost?
Three things stand out in the trade body's own figures. First, yield: a large weight of cider fruit makes a small volume of spirit. [1] Second, time: the spirit must rest in oak before sale, and longer age statements mean more years of stored stock. [1] [3] Third, the appellations set orchard limits — for example, high-stem orchards in AOC Calvados are capped at 280 trees per hectare and about 25 tonnes per hectare. Pays d'Auge also requires a pot still. [2]

Questions
Are older calvados always pricier?
Older age statements require more years in oak, which ties up stock longer; actual prices are set by each maker and seller. [3]
