Which countries make cider?

Cider is made in many countries, from the classic regions of England, France and Spain to Germany, the US, Canada, Australia and Japan. Traditions include Normandy and Brittany cidre, Asturian and Basque sidra, German Apfelwein and Quebec ice cider. Cider Radar lists cider makers in more than 50 countries.

Classic cider regions

  • England: BJCP's English Cider style is "a regional product originating in the West Country". [1] See where cider is made in England.
  • France: Normandy and Brittany, with protected appellations such as Cidre Pays d'Auge and Cornouaille. [2] [3] See the glossary entry for cidre.
  • Spain: Asturias, home of the Sidra de Asturias PDO [4], and the Basque Country. See sidra.
  • Germany, Austria and Switzerland: Apfelwein and most.
  • Canada: Quebec, where BJCP says ice cider originated in the 1990s. [5]
