Where can I buy Spanish cider?

Spanish cider (sidra) comes mainly from Asturias and the Basque Country, and the widest choice is sold there by cider mills, cider houses and local shops. Many certified Asturian mills also sell online. Outside Spain, look for importers and specialist shops, and check the label for the Sidra de Asturias PDO if you want certified Asturian apples.

Key facts

  • Two main regions. Spanish cider (sidra) styles in the BJCP guidelines come from Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country. [1]
  • Certified Asturian cider can be bought online. The Sidra de Asturias PDO regulatory council lists its certified cider mills, made with Asturian apples, with a "Buy" link to each mill's online store. [2]
  • Not every Asturian cider is PDO. The PDO covers only certified products. [3]
  • Two kinds of natural cider. The PDO describes traditional cider, which is unfiltered and meant to be poured from a height, and filtered cider ("new expression"), which is not. [4]
  • Basque cider houses are seasonal. Sagardotegiak open for the cider season from January to May. [5]

Where can I find Asturian or Basque cider?

  1. In Spain: buy from the cider mills (llagares) of Asturias or the cider houses of the Basque Country, or from local shops in those regions.
  2. Online: start with the PDO's list of certified mills, or with makers' own websites.
  3. Outside Spain: importers and specialist cider or wine shops. Ask whether the bottle is traditional (unfiltered, for pouring from a height) or filtered; see how to pour Spanish cider.
