Does calvados go bad?
Calvados does not go bad in the way food does: at 40% alcohol or more it does not spoil, and in the EU and UK drinks of 10% alcohol or more do not need a best-before date. An opened bottle slowly loses aroma as air gets in, so keep it tightly closed, upright, cool and out of direct light.

Key facts
- No best-before date needed. EU food labelling rules, kept in UK law, exempt "beverages containing 10 % or more by volume of alcohol" from the date of minimum durability. [1] [2]
- Strength. Calvados must be at least 40% ABV to be sold, and cask-strength versions can reach 55%. [3]
- Ageing happens in wood. Ageing in casks develops calvados' colour, aroma and length; the interprofession links ageing to time in barrels, where the "angels' share" evaporates. [3]
How long does calvados last once opened?
An opened bottle stays safe to drink, but the aroma fades as air replaces the spirit in the bottle. The more air in the bottle, the faster the change, so a nearly empty bottle loses character sooner than a full one. If an old opened bottle smells flat, it is less enjoyable rather than unsafe.
How should I store calvados?
- Closed. Put the cork or cap back firmly after each pour.
- Upright. Stand corked bottles upright so the spirit does not sit against the cork.
- Cool and dark. Keep it away from heat and direct sunlight, which can change colour and aroma.
- Decant small amounts. If a bottle will last a long time, pour some into a smaller bottle to reduce air contact.

Questions
Does calvados get better in the bottle?
Bottled calvados is not expected to improve the way it does in the cask. The interprofession describes ageing in barrels as what develops its colour, aromas and length, and the age on the label refers to that time in wood; see what calvados is. [3]
Should calvados be stored upright?
Upright is the usual advice for corked spirits, so the strong spirit does not sit against the cork for months. Keep the bottle cool and away from direct sunlight.
