Why does cider give me a headache?
Cider can give you a headache mainly because of the alcohol: it causes mild dehydration and is a common headache trigger, especially when you drink too much. Other substances formed in fermentation, called congeners, may make hangover symptoms worse, and some people are sensitive to sulphites. If headaches are frequent, talk to a doctor.

What health bodies say
- Alcohol. The NHS lists "drinking too much alcohol" and "not drinking enough fluids (dehydration)" among common causes of headaches. [1]
- Hangover. The NIAAA describes a hangover as a set of symptoms that occur "as a consequence of drinking too much", including thirst and headache. [2]
- Dehydration. Alcohol suppresses vasopressin, a hormone that tells the kidneys to keep fluid, so it increases urination; "The mild dehydration that results likely contributes to hangover symptoms such as thirst, fatigue, and a headache." [2]
What in cider could cause a headache?
- Alcohol. The main cause. Strong ciders and large servings mean more alcohol; check the units in how many units are in cider. [2]
- Congeners. The NIAAA calls these "compounds, other than ethyl alcohol, that are produced during fermentation" and says they could worsen hangover symptoms for some people. [2] The glossary entry for fermentation explains the process.
- Sulphites. People sensitive to sulphites may get a headache after drinking wine, according to the NIAAA. [2] Many ciders also contain them; see does cider contain sulphites.
When should I get help for a headache?
The NHS advises people with a headache not to drink alcohol, to drink plenty of water and to rest. [1] It says to see a GP if headaches keep coming back or get worse, and to call 999 or go to A&E for a sudden, extremely painful headache or one with symptoms such as numbness, confusion or loss of vision.
