Does cider contain sweeteners?

Some ciders contain sweeteners. In the UK, HMRC permits sweeteners such as acesulfame K, aspartame, saccharin and sucralose in cider, and in the EU a food containing sweeteners must say "with sweetener(s)" next to its name. Many other ciders are sweetened with sugar or juice, or not at all. Check the label.

Key facts

  • UK permitted ingredients. HMRC's list of ingredients permitted for cider and perry includes the sweeteners acesulfame-K (E950), aspartame, saccharin, sucralose and neohesperidine, as well as sugars and sugar syrups. [1]
  • EU and UK labelling. "'with sweetener(s)' this statement shall accompany the name of the food"; for foods with both, "with sugar(s) and sweetener(s)". [2] [3]
  • Aspartame. Where aspartame is listed in the ingredients, the label must say "contains aspartame (a source of phenylalanine)" (E number) or "contains a source of phenylalanine" (specific name). [2] [3]
  • Ingredient lists. Drinks with more than 1.2% alcohol do not need an ingredient list in the EU. [4] [3] In the US, cider below 7% ABV follows FDA food labelling, including an ingredient list. [5]

How is cider sweetened?

Fermentation turns the apple's sugar into alcohol, so a fully fermented cider is dry. Sweetness then comes from stopping fermentation early, from back-sweetening with juice or sugar, or from sweeteners. PNW 621, a cider-making guide, lists fresh or concentrated apple juice, sugar, honey and other fruit juices as ways to sweeten cider. [6] The guide on where sweetness comes from explains each route.

How do I tell from the label?

  1. Look for "with sweetener(s)" next to the name, if the cider is sold in the EU or the UK. [2] [3]
  2. Read the ingredient list if there is one; drinks over 1.2% may not have one. [4] [3]
  3. Sweetness words do not name the sweetener. In France, terms such as doux and brut are defined by alcohol content and density, whatever the source of the sugar. [7]

Questions

What does "with sweetener(s)" mean on a cider label?

Under EU food information rules, the statement must accompany the name of a food that contains an authorised sweetener; "with sugar(s) and sweetener(s)" is used when both are present. [2] [3]

Why do some labels mention phenylalanine?

EU rules require "contains aspartame (a source of phenylalanine)" or "contains a source of phenylalanine" where aspartame is listed in the ingredients. [2] [3] If you need to avoid phenylalanine, ask your doctor and check with the maker.

Do French ciders contain sweeteners?

French rules for cider allow sweetening, by methods set by ministerial order. [7] Labels such as doux or brut describe sweetness, not the sweetener; see which cider is sweetest.
