Where can I buy mulled cider?
Ready-made mulled cider is sold by some cider makers and drinks shops, and it is poured hot at some bars, pubs and festivals. You can also buy a still or medium cider and mull it at home with spices. In the UK, spiced versions are often not legally "cider", so read the label.

Key facts
- What it is. Cambridge Dictionary defines "mull" as "to heat wine or beer with added sugar and spices", and its example sentence is about mulling cider. [1]
- Legal name in the UK. HMRC's list of permitted cider ingredients does not include herbs, spices or other fruits. A cider with an ingredient that adds flavour and is not on the list is classed as an "other fermented product" for duty. [2] [3]
- Style. BJCP 2025 places cider with spices in C3B Spiced Cider. [4]
- Alcoholic or not. It depends on the base; see is mulled cider alcoholic.
Where can I buy mulled cider?
- From cider makers. Some makers sell a spiced or mulled cider. Check the maker's own website for what they make.
- In shops. Drinks shops may stock ready-made mulled cider; in the UK it may be named as a cider-based drink rather than as cider (see above).
- By the glass. Bars, pubs and festivals serve it hot; see where to find cider bars.
- Make it yourself. Buy a cider you like and mull it with spices; what to mix with cider has more ideas.
Which cider should I buy to mull at home?
There is no rule, but a few label points help:
- Sweetness. Medium or sweet ciders need less added sugar; see cider sweetness levels.
- Carbonation. Heating drives off bubbles, so a still cider loses nothing.
- Non-alcoholic version. In the US, fresh apple cider from an orchard or grocery store is the usual base; see where to buy apple cider.
