Is mulled cider alcoholic?

Mulled cider is alcoholic only if it is made from alcoholic cider. In the UK, mulled cider is usually alcoholic cider heated with sugar and spices. In the US, "hot mulled cider" is often made from sweet, unfermented apple cider, so it can be alcohol-free. Ask, or check the label: if alcoholic cider went in, treat the drink as alcoholic.

Key facts

  • What mulling is. Cambridge Dictionary describes mulling as "to heat wine or beer with added sugar and spices", and gives "Have you ever tried mulling cider?" as an example. [1]
  • The base decides. In US English, "cider" can mean unfermented apple juice, and "hard cider" the alcoholic drink. [2] [3]
  • Spiced cider style. BJCP's C3B Spiced Cider covers ciders with added botanicals such as spices. [4]
  • UK duty. HMRC won't approve herbs or spices for cider, so a pre-mixed spiced or mulled product may be taxed as an "other fermented product". [5]

How can I tell if mulled cider has alcohol?

  1. Ask what went in. At a market or bar, ask whether it's made from alcoholic cider or apple juice.
  2. Read the label. Bottled mulled cider shows its ABV; in the US, drinks of 0.5% ABV or more made from cider carry the health warning. [6]
  3. Don't assume heating removes the alcohol. Treat mulled cider made from alcoholic cider as an alcoholic drink, including for driving.

How is mulled cider made?

Warm cider gently with spices such as cinnamon and cloves, and sugar or honey to taste, without boiling. For an alcohol-free version, start from apple juice or US-style sweet cider (see what sweet cider is). If you use unpasteurised juice, note that the FDA warns untreated juice can contain harmful bacteria. [7]
