Why is cider made where it is?
Most cideries are close to orchards: the leading cider states are also the leading apple states, with Washington, New York and Michigan producing the most apples. [1] State law matters too, as each state defines and licenses cider differently, from Colorado's 7% limit to Oregon's 8.5%. [11] [12] The state answers in the table explain the local rules.
