Is sparkling cider alcoholic?
Usually, yes: in the UK and most of Europe, sparkling cider is an alcoholic cider with bubbles. In the US it depends, because "cider" can also mean apple juice, so some sparkling ciders are non-alcoholic. Check the label: an alcohol percentage, or in the US the government health warning, shows that it contains alcohol.

Key facts
- Outside the US, cider is alcoholic. BJCP notes that outside the US, cider refers to the fermented product. [1]
- US labels. The government health warning is required on cider of 0.5% ABV or more. [2]
- US terms. "Sparkling cider" on a TTB label means the bubbles come from a secondary fermentation in a closed container; injected CO₂ makes it "carbonated cider". [2]
- UK law. For duty, sparkling cider is cider in a container with an excess pressure of 3 bar or more, or with a mushroom stopper held by a tie, whatever the pressure. [3]
How can I tell if a sparkling cider has alcohol?
- Look for the ABV. Alcoholic ciders show the alcohol by volume on the label.
- In the US, look for the health warning. It appears on ciders of 0.5% ABV or more. [2]
- Check the name. In the US, "hard cider" means alcoholic. [1] Words like "juice" or "non-alcoholic" point the other way; the US "sweet cider" sense is explained in what sweet cider is.
How do ciders get their bubbles?
- Bottle fermentation: a second fermentation in the bottle, as in the traditional method. See traditional method.
- Added CO₂: carbon dioxide is injected before packaging. In France, only bubbles from fermentation, with no added gas, can be called "effervescence naturelle". [4]
