Should I shake kombucha before drinking?

Usually no — shaking kombucha stirs up sediment and can fizz over like a shaken soda. Gentle invert or roll if you want yeast mixed; open slowly over a sink after chilling. The same pressure caution applies to bottle-conditioned sparkling cider.

Key facts

  • Carbonation. Finished kombucha is often lively; TTB notes ongoing fermentation can raise pressure and alcohol. [1] [2]
  • Default. Do not hard-shake refrigerated kombucha.
  • Sediment. Yeast at the bottom is normal; swirling gently redistributes it.
  • Pressure. Warm bottles foam more — chill before opening.

When is a gentle roll useful?

If you prefer a cloudy pour with yeast in suspension, tip the bottle slowly rather than shaking. Keep the bottle cold first — warm kombucha foams harder when the seal breaks. Sparkling cider opening habits differ: how to open a sparkling cider bottle.

Does shaking change flavour permanently?

It mainly changes texture and CO₂ release in the glass, not the recipe. Sediment redistributes for one pour; shaking does not create lasting bubbles if the bottle was already flat. Compare alcohol risk: does kombucha have alcohol. Guide: what is cider.

Questions

What if my kombucha is flat?

It may need another sealed day for carbonation — shaking will not create lasting fizz and can make a mess.
