Can you make apple brandy at home?

You cannot legally make apple brandy at home in the US or the UK without a licence. US federal law strictly prohibits producing distilled spirits at home, although adults may make cider and wine for personal use. In the UK, the home-use exemption for making alcohol excludes spirits. Apple brandy such as calvados is made in licensed distilleries.

Questions

Is freeze distilling cider into applejack legal at home?

Concentrating cider by freezing turns it into a much stronger drink, so it raises the same legal question as distilling. The US home-production exemption covers wine and beer, not spirits, so check with TTB or your national authority before trying it. [1] [2]

What are the penalties for home distilling in the US?

TTB says offences such as possessing an unregistered still or unlawful production of distilled spirits are felonies punishable by up to 5 years in prison, a fine of up to $10,000, or both, for each offence. [1]
